Before a person considers any type of surgery, you should do a little research. Research Physicians that have performed the operation, and the results for at least up to a year later. You don't want to go it this blind, make sure there are plenty of recommendations, just be safe about it. According to Wikipedia, a person that wants to obtain a sex reassignment surgery, needs to go to through intensive therapy for a while, just to make sure that they are wanting this for the right reasons. Then, this person must live as the sex they want to become for a year or more. Meaning that they have to live as if they were female if they were a man wanting to be a woman. Then comes the reconstructive surgery, according to Wikipedia, male to female transgendered have to have breast enhancement surgery, facial reconstruction, and vocal lessons, before they have their genitalia reassignment. Female to male seems to be more difficult that male to female, the problem, according to Wikipedia, is with the genitalia. They usually don't have the right feeling, and don't function properly, while the female to male procedure has not been perfected yet, It hopefully soon will. The downfall if you can call it that, is that once the surgery has been completed, this person will no longer be able to reproduce. There are many options that a person can go with other that producing their own child, although it can be done through surrogacy, from frozen eggs and sperm.
If you know someone that is considering this operation, or maybe you are, just make sure that this is what is wanted. Make sure that the research is done, including the research on the surgeon doing the procedure. All I can say is, become the person that you know you are, whether it is the way you are now, or cosmetically altered.
