THEN AND NOW

In the 70's to the mid 80's there was a very active lesbian movement in the southeast. We met all over the south. We held mini conferences every two or three months in Va, Tn, Ga, Fl, and NC. We dealt with racism and sexism inside the lesbian community. We wanted all lesbians to feel comfortable joining us. We did many trust game exercises.

We took a stand because the mostly white women's/feminist's groups didn't want us. They thought our sexuality  would be the downfall of the "women's" movement. They would welcome us as long as we did not identify ourselves as lesbians. They felt any progress was better than none. As a group we lesbians pointed out to them , unless we all got our rights the "MAN" still won. More on this later.

As far as I know we started the first lesbian archives outside Knoxville in 1978. In that city we also started Glenwood House which was a safe place for women in transition to rest, re-group and make choices for their own lives.

I have to stop now. I just found out my granddaughter lost her baby. If you pray, please, say a prayer for my family. I'll finish this next week.
